Ever wonder how websites stay fast no matter how many people access them? Or how they seem to be just as fast no matter where you access them? Chances are, you don’t really think about it. But the moment that it’s not there, you’ll notice. Slow websites hurt. Users don’t wait for content, especially on mobile devices. Billions of dollars a year are lost because of slow websites and it never makes the news. According to the Akamai’s study on the performance of web applications, a “1-second performance improvement nets out to be about a 7% increase in conversion.”
Medicom Health Interactive’s web tools are designed to perform. First, we work to optimize our files to ensure everything is as small as possible. Second, we deliver our Flash tools through a Content Delivery Network (CDN). Last, we use load balancing technology for our data gateways to speed up data access. Here’s a bit more about each of those performance-enhancing strategies:
As part of our technology process, we focus on speed, and in this business, that means file size. The larger the file, the slower the download and the longer the user has to wait to do something. In some cases, we have delivered full-featured Flash solutions that were smaller than an image. Depending on the size of the project and intended usage, we use a variety of different strategies to optimize your solution.
Content Delivery Networks
For our hosted Flash applications, we leverage a Content Delivery Network for larger files. This allows us to place our files in one location, and have them securely distributed to servers all over the world. Then, when your users access the file, their computer is directed to the nearest server. So, users from Houston who are accessing a Flash application that we host will be directed to the Dallas server. Another user accessing that same file from San Diego will get it from the Los Angeles server. A user in Berlin will get the file from Frankfurt, and so on. We have 17 different locations around the world, and that number is growing. The best part is that this is completely transparent to the user.
Load Balanced Data Gateways
Finally, we leverage load balancing technologies for our data gateways. This means that we have multiple servers handling all of the data-intensive parts of the job. Analytics tracking, user logins and password changes, data saving, and more are all balanced across multiple servers for both speed and added redundancy. Additional servers are easily added and removed in near real-time based on the usage of the tool, making sure that no matter how many people are using your solution, we are ready.
If you are shopping around for a health web solution, be sure to ask about speed and optimization. The last thing you’ll want is a solution that works but takes two minutes to open. Anyone can say they offer a hosted solution, but does it perform? If you are looking for health web solutions that perform, give us a call (800-971-0785) or contact us online.
